These two revamped-for-2024 models benefit from updates to the 999 cc inline-four engine at the heart of the BMW superbike, the S 1000 RR and its up-spec companion, the M 1000 RR.
Let’s not bury the lede here and get right to it: The 2024 M 1000 XR sports a claimed 201 horsepower.
2. 0. 1. That’s 31 more horses than the 2024 S 1000 XR. And the M XR weighs 492 pounds compared to the S XR’s 500. BMW claims a 0-to-60 time of 3.2 seconds and says the top speed is above 170 MPH.
That amount of power comes at a staggering 12,750 RPM (redline is over 14,000), with max torque of 83 pound-feet coming in at 11,000 RPM. Both bikes feature 17-inch wheels front and rear; the rear wheel is a massive six inches wide, with the S XR getting a 190/55 tire and the M XR a 200/55.
Everything about the M 1000 XR is, of course, M-level and optimized for the performance M aficionados expect. BMW has revised the ratios for gears 4-6, and bumped the sprocket from 45 to 47 teeth to take advantage of all those horses. M Winglets provide over 40 pounds of front downforce, ensuring the bike stays planted under high-speed conditions.
For the S 1000 XR, horsepower maxes out at 11,000 RPM, providing 170 hp—five more than the previous generation. Torque for the S-XR remains unchanged at 84 pound-feet at 9,250 RPM. (These are crank measurements from BMW Motorrad.)
BMW redesigned the seat of the XR to provide the rider with more space to shift; they also raised the seat height nearly half an inch to 33.5 inches, opening up the hip-knee-ankle angles a bit as well.
The new S 1000 XR features a rash of standard high-tech appointments, including Integral ABS (with Race ABS linked to Riding Modes), Dynamic Traction Control, Dynamic Brake Control, Dynamic ESA, Dynamic Engine Brake Control, and anti-hopping wet clutch, Headlight Pro, Keyless Ride and a USB charging socket—and a whole lot more. It’s available in Blackstorm Metallic 2, Gravity Blue Metallic, or Light White/M Motorsport color schemes.
Standard features on the M 1000 XR include BMW Motorrad’s newest and most-often-requested features, including Ride Modes Pro, Integral ABS Pro (with Race ABS available depending on the ride mode), Dynamic Damper Control, Dynamic Traction Control, Dynamic Engine Brake Control, Dynamic ESA, Gear Shift Assist Pro, Brake Slide Assist, Hill Start Control Pro, Adaptive Headlight Pro, cruise control, Keyless Ride, and the M-level items you would expect to see on an M bike, including upgraded brakes, wheels, chain, seat, level and the M Endurance Chain.
Options for the S 1000 XR include Gear Shift Assist Pro, Cruise Control, heated grips, a center stand, tire pressure monitoring, the M Carbon Package, M Endurance chain, M Carbon or Forged wheels and more.
Options for the M 1000 XR are fewer, as much of what is available as an option for the S version comes standard on the M version. Riders can add the Competition Package, plus M Carbon wheels and other carbon fiber accoutrements, the M GPS Laptrigger, bar-end mirrors or a high windshield. Torque Optimised Engine Calibration is also available at additional cost.
Prices start at $18,190 for the S 1000 XR and $24,990 for the M 1000 XR.
